How to Use AI to Fix Things Around the House

Before you pay someone, find out what you're dealing with. AI apps can look at a photo of the problem, tell you what it probably is, and walk you through a fix.

How to do it, step by step

  1. Take a clear photo of the problem, plus one of any model number or label.
  2. Open the Gemini or ChatGPT app and ask: "What's wrong here and how do I fix it? I'm a beginner."
  3. Ask what tools and parts you'll need and roughly what they cost.
  4. Use Google Lens on the broken part to find the same one at the hardware store.
  5. Search YouTube for the repair to watch it done before you start.
Tip: Turn off the water, power or gas first. For electrical panels, gas lines or anything on the roof, call a pro.
